PostHeaderIcon Detecting Allergies

Allergies can occasionally be hard to detect. I know people who are allergic to nuts, fish, peanut butter, eggs, oranges, tomatoes… and a few other items. Sometimes, it takes trial and error to find out what causes the allergic reactions. Treatments can be given. Abstention is the best cure! Today, however, I wish to apprise you of a frequently not talked about allergy. Medical science is not needed for its diagnosis; only visual observations. Drum roll! The allergy to which I refer – is people who are allergic to work! I know a number of those lazy, allergic to work folks. Don’t you? Unfortunately, only they can cure themselves! Working is the solution! Getting them to perform is the challenge!

Bottom line: God will not allow any person to keep you from your destiny. They may be bigger, stronger, or more powerful, but God knows how to shift things around and get you to where you’re supposed to be. Joel Osteen”
Every Sunday morning before leaving for church, I listen to Joel Osteen. When he was in Cleveland some years ago, I was sitting right there in the Quicken Loans Arena audience digesting his every word! I have truly been inspired by him. After purchasing his book, “Your Best Life Now,” my daughter gave me the Audio version. What a terrific gift! I would insert a disk and Pastor Osteen and I traveled Interstate 71 a many days. If you want to be motivated, just listen to him! If he cannot make you get up out of your seat, no one can! “I Declare,” he can give you “31 promises to speak over your life.” Happy Sunday!

PostHeaderIcon Trick or Treat!

By Vernalee

This time of the year, everyone is asking the proverbial question, “Who will you be for Halloween; What costume are you wearing?” I loved trick or treat activities as we gallivanted through the neighborhoods when my children were young. The families in Shaker Heights realized that we adults were only kids at heart. Many of them had delicious treats for us. Hot apple cider, Yum! Those were the days! The other day, however, I realized that some individuals wear a costume every day because they cannot face the music of everyday life! They pretend that they are somebody else. Why not just be you? So I guess the operative question is “Not who you want to be for Halloween; Who are you, Monday through Sunday? I’ll dress to that!

PostHeaderIcon Three Types of People in your life!

By Vernalee
TD Jakes pininterest
When I attended the Momentum 2014 Conference last week in Columbus, Ohio, “Carol’s Daughter” founder, Lisa Price referenced T. D. Jakes sermon on “3 Types of People in Your Life.” I had the opportunity to watch this 8 minute video. Bishop Jakes called them, ” Confidants, constituents, and comrades.” The confidants are people who are for you. Unconditionally, your confidants weep with you, rejoice with you, and are happy for you….Confidants will make sure that you reach your destiny. Your constituents are for what you are for; while your comrades are against what you are against. Jakes cautions us to not confuse the groups, because constituents and comrades will leave you! If you have two or three confidants in your lifetime, you are blessed! I thank God for giving me the wisdom to discern that a diamond is coal first! There have been times that I have been wrong and erroneously classified who was who in my life! It happens to the best of us! I am not technologically savvy enough to embed this video for your viewing, but a google of same is well worth the watch! It’s important to know who’s who in your life!

PostHeaderIcon To dream the impossible dream…!

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to see Motown, the musical. The show was fantastic! The musical opened with the Tempting Temptations and the cast included performances by the Four Tops, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, The Jackson Five, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Mary Wells, The Commodores, Teena Marie, Rick James, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and so many legendary artists and groups. With Berry Gordy at the forefront, the story was told as you mentally walked back in history because many of the lyrics reflected the times. In reality, songs are words about life put to music! Although I danced and sung to the top of my vocal chords, the musical is more than a play about songs, artists, choreography, and Motown. It is a demonstration of a man fulfilling and living his dream; a man who wouldn’t take “NO” for an answer! It is a testimony as Diana Ross said to Berry, “If you can think it, I can do it!” All dreams start with an idea! It is left up to us to make them come true. Berry Gordy did! We can too!

PostHeaderIcon Looking busy or busy looking?

By Vernalee

There’s a person in your office who could win the best actor award for looking busy! You know exactly who I’m talking about. There he goes! He stays on his cell phone supposedly responding to urgent business calls. He takes his iPad everywhere. In meetings, most people think that he is taking notes, but I saw him surfing the internet before switching to play candy crush. Everybody knows that he is playing games, but when you are the “favorite child,” you can do as you please. His company travel will make a Delta Airline pilot squirm, because Mr. Looking Busy frequent flyer miles exceed his! He brings nothing back from his trips but an attitude; a superior one at that! So don’t be fooled with his looking busy routine. It’s his cameo office appearance. Rather, be on guard because while it appears that he is looking busy, he is really busy looking at you so that he can tell the paranoid boss that you can’t be trusted. Oh what a tangled web he weaves! He’ll rob you blind and attempt to steal your dignity while simultaneously grabbing your hand for a word of prayer! What a transparent hypocritical “busy looking guy” that without looking hard, you can see right through him!

I resent people who aim and throw a hand grenade at you and walk by you as if nothing has happened! Who do they think that they are fooling? How phony! They pretend to be innocent, but their pusillanimous / unassuming appearance invariably is just as fake as they are! If there is a problem, why not confront the person particularly if he / she is a neighbor or in close proximity to your space. Be a man or woman about it; not a punk! Is it a lack of courage? Does the person have something to prove to a higher authority? Is there resentment? Who knows? Regardless, their tactics may backfire. In some occasions, the grenade stem may not work and the perpetrator may be blown up to smithereens instead of you! POW!

PostHeaderIcon Running on empty!

By Vernalee

For the first time in over 45 years, I ran out of gas! Yes, you read it correctly. When it occurred, embarrassed was not the word! “How did it happen?” you might ask. Simply and honestly, I deviated from my habitual routine. I always stop at the same gas station as I travel this particular interstate. In addition, I was also in a rental car on a different route and talking excessively on my cell phone. So, I didn’t notice the fuel warning light. These are logical explanations and excuses… right? This incident took me back to the late 1960’s. When I was a teenager, my parents gave us kids a gas guzzler 1963 Pontiac. I loved that “boat of a car!” Although my Daddy owned a service station, we were always running out of gas. We could not get free gasoline for our pleasure rides; we had to earn our keep and pay for fuel. How uncivilized of our parents, I thought! Money was hard to come by for me in those days so I pushed that Pontiac to the limits – quite frequently and much to the displeasure of my Daddy. At the time, paying 30 cents for a gallon of gas was a lot of cash! When I became a Mother, I would lambast my teenage children for riding around with their gasoline needle on near empty. Never in a million years would I have thought that I would be so careless or preoccupied to do the same! Mistakes happen to the best of us! That is my story and I am sticking to it!
